What Are Dental Veneers?
Think of dental veneers like the façade on a building. All of that exterior brick and stonework hides the less visually appealing structural elements like ductwork and framing. While dental veneers aren’t made from brick or stone (but from high-quality porcelain), they are essentially thin, shell-like facades that are placed overtop the front-facing surface of your teeth. Patients love that achieving a Hollywood-esq smile can be that simple and quick!
The Process of Getting Veneers
The first step is meeting with one of our cosmetic dentists for a consultation. This allows our team to get to know you and your smile goals so we can provide results you’ll love. We’ll also examine your existing pearly whites to get a good sense of your oral situation. If something might interfere with your veneers, we’ll discuss the best approach for taking care of it. That way you can be confident in your oral health and the success of your veneers.
Placing dental veneers aesthetically does require removing a sliver of enamel. This layer will essentially be replaced by your new veneers, meaning that your teeth will still be well-protected. It’s a safe, minimally invasive process. Patients with weakened enamels can actually experience less dental sensitivity thanks to the durable porcelain!
Finally, we’ll take digital impressions of your teeth and send them to a dental lab. While the technicians work on creating a picture-perfect set of veneers, we’ll fit you with a temporary set, so your pearly whites don’t have to go without protection. Your next follow up will involve adhering your veneers and polishing off your new smile.

Veneer FAQs
Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?
You should be able to drink coffee without physically harming your dental veneers in Athens. However, if you’re a habitual coffee-drinker, the strong pigments in this dark-colored liquid could stain your cosmetics over time. If this happens, we won’t be able to whiten your veneers in the same way we can whiten natural teeth. In some cases, a good polishing is all it takes to make discolored veneers look good as new, but in others, we have to replace the cosmetics entirely.
To avoid frequent staining, we recommend limiting your coffee consumption or drinking through a straw (which minimizes contact between the coffee and your veneers.)
Can Veneers Be Used for Bite Corrections?
Yes – although dental veneers cannot change the physical alignment of your jaw, so they’re best suited for cases where an uneven bite is caused by misshapen teeth. For example, if you have a tooth or two that’s shorter than the others, then giving it more length with a dental veneer will help your bite rest more evenly.
Be sure to talk to your cosmetic dentist in Athens about what’s possible for your smile!
How Many Veneers Will I Need?
It will ultimately depend on your smile goals. If there’s only one tooth you’re wanting to enhance, for example, then you’ll only need one veneer. For a more comprehensive transformation, you might need anywhere from six to eight. In more severe cases of extensive dental damage or asymmetry, some patients have needed as many as 12 veneers!
Basically, we strive to be as conservative as possible and will recommend the least number of veneers necessary for beautifying your visible teeth. Rest assured, our team will be upfront and transparent with you during your consultation, so if you have any questions about the number of dental veneers planned for your treatment, don’t hesitate to ask!
Is It Painful to Get Veneers?
Before removing your enamel and placing your veneers, we’ll numb your mouth with a local anesthetic – which most patients find to be effective at minimizing discomfort. However, we recognize that not everyone experiences pain in the same way. If dental appointments tend to be distressing for you due to anxiety, sensitivity, a specific medical condition, or anything else, please let us know. We’re able to administer nitrous oxide sedation in-office and can prescribe a sedative pill for those with more severe symptoms. Sedation dentistry solutions like these are often able to help patients tolerate treatments they would normally find uncomfortable.
